Lladro

Detailed sculptures in handcrafted porcelain

The Spanish firm Lladró is based in Tavernes Blanques, Valencia. Its hand-painted porcelain sculptures and figurines are of exceptional quality, and they are renowned throughout the world for that reason. An astonishing level of detail is especially characteristic of their frequently impressive compositions.

The firm was founded in 1953 by three brothers: Juan, José and Vicente Lladró. They initially produced vases and jugs above all. Production of their famous figurines did not start until 1956. The “City of Porcelain”, a complex specifically built to encourage artistic development and technical innovation, was opened in 1969. It currently employs more than 2,000 people.

Lladró also founded the Collectors’ Society, which presents an “annual sculpture” each year. To qualify for the distinction, the sculptures have to be issued in very limited editions and exhibit exceptional craftsmanship. The series includes several splendid items, such as “Little Pals” and “Bacante con Felino”. The Collector’s Society has now been replaced by Lladró Privilege. There is presently also a Lladró museum in New York.
